What should a tutor do at the beginning of the first session?

At the beginning of the first session, after introducing yourself, it is important to make sure that the student is comfortable. It is also important to understand the ability of the student, as well as their perceived ability which can oftentimes differ due to a lack of confidence.

What is the most important thing a tutor must do when a session has ended?

The most important thing that a tutor must do at the end of the lesson is reinforce what has been covered, and make sure that the student doesn’t have any lingering questions. The lesson should always end on a positive and encouraging note to ensure the student is happy and willing to come and learn the next time.

Which is a good strategy for poor study skills?

A good strategy for study skills that may need some improvement is to make a timetable and attempt to stick to it. The timetable should also include allocated time slots for socialising and relaxation, as studying is more effective with breaks and a healthy mindset. Review the timetable every term and adjust it as you need.

What do you do to teach at a level within the student’s grasp so that he or she is not overwhelmed, frustrated, or discouraged.

Teaching is more effective when the student is engaged and has confidence in their ability. Work should begin with questions that the student can do easily to build this confidence before quickly moving into work that is a little more difficult. To ensure the student doesn’t become overwhelmed, frustrated or discouraged, it is important to be patient with them, and use positive comments to keep them going. Criticism must be provided constructively, and with a suggested improvement so that it can be taken on board, learnt from and applied next time.
